Likes: Snow, mountains, waves, beer and cake.

Dislikes: Giraffes.

Going to miss the most in Greenland: Beer and my guitar.

Fran is from Hinckley, Leicestershire, and after spending 4 years living and working in the Alps, now resides in the “real world”, working for Alliance-Healthcare as a pharmaceutical goods delivery driver, whilst keeping up his love of trees and fitness by engaging in tree surgery when he can and leading Nordic Walking classes.

Fran spends most of his free time with his much-loved friends and family, surfing or walking and climbing in the mountains, and generally being out of doors.

In preparation for this expedition, Fran will be brushing up on his skiing and touring skills learnt during his time in the Alps, and training hard both in handling kites and snow-kiting techniques. Also he will be increasing his fitness training to prepare for the physical challenges this expedition will produce.

“As for my companions nickname… just read through his hobbies, achievements and future plans. Yep, you’d have to be pretty ‘keen’. Mustard has, for as long as I’ve known him, exuded this virtue in spades!”

Likes: Coffee, music and people with common sense!

Dislikes: Lateness and being bored!

Going to miss the most in Greenland: Vast amounts of coffee!

Mustard grew up in Cumbria, England but since leaving school has spent most of the time living and working abroad. He has travelled and worked in Australia, Nepal, Thailand, Japan, Finland, Czech Republic , Iceland, Greenland and many more but spends most of his time playing in the Alps. For the last 6 years Mustard has been based in the Bernese Oberland in the Swiss Alps where he worked for several years at the World Scout Centre in Kandersteg as the Programme Director before moving to Gstaad to work for Alpin Zentrum / Swiss Adventures as an adventure guide. Mustard spends his work days white water rafting, canyoning, climbing, skiing and more and when he’s not busy with work likes to spend his time climbing, skiing, snow boarding, ice climbing, mountaineering, mountain biking, skydiving, and of course snow kiting.

This will be his second expediton to the Greenland icecap. In 2007 he crossed east to west with Matt Franzke on a 26 day ski expedition. In previous years Mustard has been on other expeditions to Russia, Iceland and Nepal and is currently planning ski and climbing expeditons to Denali in Alaski, The South Pole and Aconcagua in Argentina.

Mustard is fortunate enough to live in the Alps which will help when it comes to training for such an expedition. On the run up to the Greenland expedition he will spend his time training in the local mountains, as well as snow kiting on a local glacier.

You can ask Fran where the name „Mustard“ came from!
